What Happens When You Don't Service Your Turbocharged Honda CR-V

A Smoking Engine Highlights Maintenance Importance

At Blackwood Dyno Tune & Service, we often see vehicles come through our workshop with issues that could have been avoided with routine maintenance. One such case involved a customer who brought in their turbocharged Honda CR-V, concerned about excessive smoke coming from the exhaust. With under 130,000 kilometres on the clock, this vehicle should have still been running smoothly, but further investigation revealed that neglecting regular servicing had taken a serious toll on the engine. This case highlights not only the consequences of skipping maintenance but also the critical role it plays in ensuring the longevity and performance of any vehicle, especially those with complex systems like turbocharged engines.

Engine Damage Caused by Neglected Servicing

Upon closer inspection, it became evident that the root of the problem lay in a lack of regular servicing. When the rocker cover was removed, a significant build-up of oil sludge was discovered. This sludge, formed when old oil thickens over time, had turned into a dense paste that obstructed the normal flow of oil through the engine oil galleries, preventing effective lubrication.

The situation was further exacerbated by a blocked oil gallery filter which fed the turbo and had become completely clogged, cutting off the flow of oil into the turbo oil delivery line. Without adequate lubrication, the engine’s components were subjected to excessive wear. A particularly concerning issue involved the impeller, a vital part of the turbo system. A nut had worked loose from the impeller shaft, causing the turbo impeller to strike the housing repeatedly and ultimately destroy itself.

These compounding issues left the engine entirely starved of oil, unable to function properly and at serious risk of irreparable damage. It was clear that the underlying cause of these failures was neglect, as consistent servicing would have ensured the engine remained clean and well-lubricated, preventing such severe complications.

In this case our customer had two options. Rebuild the existing engine or opt for a good second hand motor from one of our reputable suppliers that offer a good warranty.

Rebuilding an engine is a time consuming exercise and in this case would have been a much more expensive option.

We were able to source a complete second hand engine in good condition that came with a good warranty for a reasonable price, so the customer chose to proceed with this option.

Engine Replacement for Turbocharged Honda CR-V

The first step involved carefully removing the damaged engine from the vehicle.

Once the engine was out, the team focused on removing the various ancillary items.

A new oil filter was installed to ensure proper flow through the replacement engine system. In addition, fresh oil was added to lubricate all components effectively. Each part was carefully selected and installed to meet the vehicle’s specifications and ensure optimal performance.

Ensuring Longevity Through Regular Vehicle Maintenance

The replacement of the turbocharged Honda CR-V engine at Blackwood Dyno Tune & Service was completed successfully, restoring the vehicle to optimal performance. However, the cost and extent of the repairs highlight the preventable nature of the issue.
